Bath time can be an enjoyable part of your parental responsibilities if done properly. The following are a few bathing safety tips to make sure baby’s bath time is safe and fun.
- Always stay within arm's length of baby at all times and never take your eyes off baby. A bath seat will give baby the much needed added support while in the bathtub, but it is not intended as a safety measure and will not protect baby from injury or drowning. Bath tubs and accessories should only be used with children who are capable of sitting upright with out assistance.
- Always make sure the water is warm – not hot. Babies have very sensitive skin. Your hot water heater needs to be no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Never use adult shampoo on baby. Make sure you have a “no-tears” brand of baby shampoo.
- Make bath time fun! Use age-appropriate bath toys or bath books to engage baby in the experience. With newborns, this can be as simple as a clean washcloth to suck on. Later, stacking cups or any water activity toys would be very pleasing to baby.
